How we verify

CPA Firm Check is compiled from public records, not from who paid to be listed.

Sources

California: every week we check the Department of Consumer Affairs' public-information share for the California Board of Accountancy's licensee file (published monthly) and keep CPA corporations, CPA partnerships and fictitious name registrations with status Active, an expiration date that has not passed and a California address. Individual CPAs are not listed.

Illinois: every week we query IDFPR's professional licensing dataset for Public Accountant Firm Licenses with status Active, an unexpired license and an Illinois address. The entity type comes from IDFPR's record; where IDFPR doesn't state it, we leave it blank. Disciplinary entries are shown exactly as IDFPR records them (date, action, case number, reason) and labelled "discipline on record".

"Registered since" or "licensed since" is the original issue date in the state file. Neither file includes phone numbers or emails, and the Illinois file has no street address.

We list firms; we do not rate, rank or recommend them, and a listing is not an endorsement by us or by either state. Order within a city: longest-registered first, then alphabetical. Featured firms pay a flat monthly fee, the same for every firm and never tied to clients or referrals; they appear in a separate, labelled box and never change the order.

A firm missing here may still be properly licensed (for example, based in another state, or a California sole practitioner working under their own name). Check the state's lookup.

What a badge means

State-licensed: the firm's license or registration appears as Active, with an expiration date that has not passed, in the California Board of Accountancy's licensee file (CPA corporations, CPA partnerships and fictitious name registrations) or in IDFPR's Illinois licensing file (Public Accountant Firm License) on the date shown. It is not an endorsement or a rating. We only publish positive matches. A listing without a badge is not an accusation — most gaps are name variations between registries.

Freshness

Data was last refreshed on 2026-10-16. California publishes its licensee file monthly and Illinois updates daily; we re-check both every week.
